The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has raised the alarm about a dangerous trend on TikTok called the Invisible Challenge, warning that it could harm your device and steal your personal information.
According to NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Mouka, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the challenge to spread a harmful virus known as WASP (or W4SP) Stealer. This virus is designed to secretly steal sensitive data like passwords, personal files, and even track your online activities.
Here’s how it works: The Invisible Challenge uses a filter that makes people appear as though they’re naked but blurred out. Some hackers are posting TikTok videos with links to software they claim can “remove” this filter. If you click on the link and try to download this fake “unfilter” software, your device gets infected with the malware.
The advisory also revealed that the malware is hosted on Discord, a platform where hackers had created a group called “Space Unfilter.” At its peak, this group had 32,000 members before it was shut down. Some of the videos promoting the malicious link gained over a million views before TikTok suspended the accounts.
Once the malware infects your device, it can track everything you type, take screenshots, and monitor your online activity—all without you knowing.
The NCC is urging people to avoid clicking on suspicious links and to stay away from challenges like this that could put their devices and personal data at risk. Stay safe!
