President Bola Tinubu has appointed Brigadier General Kunle Nafiu as the new Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), replacing Brigadier General Yushau Dogara Ahmed.
Brigadier General Nafiu’s appointment comes after Brigadier General Ahmed’s brief tenure, which began in January 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. Ahmed had been appointed following the dismissal of Brigadier General Mohammed Fadah, who was removed due to alleged incompetence and poor performance.
According to sources within the NYSC, Brigadier General Nafiu’s appointment takes immediate effect. However, both the Presidency and the NYSC leadership are yet to release an official statement confirming the change.
The appointment is part of ongoing efforts to reposition the NYSC for better service delivery and improved management of the national youth programme.
Though details of Brigadier General Nafiu’s professional background are still emerging, his experience within the military is expected to shape his approach to managing the NYSC.
Many stakeholders are now watching closely to see how the new leadership will address key challenges facing the scheme, including welfare issues, deployment concerns, and calls for a comprehensive NYSC reform.
