President Bola Tinubu has appointed six new Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) for key federal hospitals across Nigeria, covering Akure, Gombe, Azare, Lafia, Maiduguri, and Kafanchan. This announcement was made in a statement released by presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday.
The new appointees include Prof. Olusegun Sylvester Ojo, who will now lead the Federal Teaching Hospital in Akure, Ondo State. Prof. Ojo, a respected medical expert, previously served as the first Chief Medical Director of Ondo State Specialist Hospital.
In Gombe, Prof. Yusuf Mohammed Abdullahi has been reappointed as CMD of the Federal Teaching Hospital, after what the presidency called an “outstanding performance” during his first term. His second and final term officially began on September 5, 2024.
Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, who had been serving as Acting CMD of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Azare, Bauchi State, has now been confirmed as the substantive head of the hospital. His tenure started on December 6, 2024.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ikrama Hassan, a consultant physician, has been appointed CMD of the newly upgraded Federal Teaching Hospital in Lafia, Nasarawa State. Before this, Dr. Hassan led Dalhatu Ibrahim Arab Specialist Hospital, which has now been elevated to a teaching hospital.
In Maiduguri, Dr. Ali Mohammed Ramat, a renowned orthopaedic and spine surgeon, has been appointed CMD of the newly created National Orthopedic Hospital. Similarly, in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Dr. Haruna Abubakar Shehu, a Consultant Family Physician, will now head the newly established Federal Medical Centre.
President Tinubu congratulated all the appointees, urging them to bring professionalism, transparency, and dedication to their roles. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s healthcare system and ensuring better access to quality medical care for all citizens.
