Tinubu Gets Credit, Defence Minister Slammed Over Insecurity

Opialu Fabian, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for demonstrating strong political will in the fight against insecurity, highlighting that the current security budget is the highest in Nigeria’s history.

Speaking on TVC News, Fabian stated: “The President has done well. The budgetary provision is the highest in history, meaning the President has done well with the will to fight insecurity.”

However, he sharply criticised some of the President’s appointees, especially the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, saying they have not delivered on their mandate.

Fabian pointed to the recent comments by former Defence Minister Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, who urged Nigerians to resort to self-help. “If TY Danjuma is calling for self-help, that means he has passed a vote of no confidence on the current Minister of Defence,” Fabian said.

He further accused Badaru of poor intelligence gathering and an inability to respond to the nation’s complex security landscape. “Intelligence gathering is critical, and his failure in this area has worsened the situation,” Fabian noted.

Calling for his resignation, Fabian said: “The Minister should thank Nigerians and the President for the opportunity and step aside. His continued stay will only deepen the crisis.”

Fabian also called for a complete overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, saying the Armed Forces are struggling due to poor leadership rather than lack of capacity.

He urged Benue and Plateau state governments to adopt more drastic and holistic measures rather than surface-level solutions, stating that the root causes of insecurity must be tackled directly.
