President Bola Tinubu on Thursday commended the National Assembly for approving the State of Emergency in Rivers State, calling it a critical step toward restoring stability after months of political turmoil.
The President specifically acknowledged Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for putting the security and welfare of Rivers residents above political differences. He emphasized that their decision was necessary to prevent further escalation of the crisis, which had threatened the national economy and vital oil installations.
In a statement released by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu highlighted the importance of the intervention. “The near-total collapse of governance, threats to federal economic assets, and the risk of widespread violence left no room for hesitation. This emergency measure is a lifeline to safeguard livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability,” he stated.
The six-month emergency rule grants the newly appointed Sole Administrator the authority to stabilize the state, address governance breakdowns, and mediate conflicts among political factions. Tinubu reassured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to national peace, economic resilience, and equitable development.
He praised the National Assembly’s unity and patriotic approach, saying, “Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the actions of leaders.”
The President urged all stakeholders in Rivers State to support efforts to restore peace and thanked Nigerians for their understanding during this period of intervention.
