President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced major leadership changes at several federal universities, including the University of Abuja, now renamed Yakubu Gowon University. The changes, effective immediately, were disclosed by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga on Thursday.
At Yakubu Gowon University, the entire governing council has been dissolved, and Vice-Chancellor Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi has been removed from her position. Senator Lanre Tejuoso, currently Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University. He will be replaced in Makurdi by Senator Joy Emordi, who is now Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education.
To fill the role of Vice-Chancellor, President Tinubu appointed Professor Lar Patricia Manko as Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month term. However, she will not be eligible to apply for the permanent position when it opens.
These changes signal a significant overhaul in the leadership of Nigeria’s federal universities.
