Authorities have confirmed the rearrest of two more inmates who escaped from Koton Karfe Correctional Service in Kogi State, bringing the total number of recaptured prisoners to seven.
The Acting Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, Sly Nwakuche, made the announcement on Monday during a press briefing at the facility.
Nwakuche expressed regret over the killing of a correctional officer by the escaped inmates and assured the public that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining fugitives.
He urged citizens to provide security agencies with any useful information that could lead to the capture of the remaining five escapees.
The jailbreak occurred in the early hours of Monday when twelve inmates fled the facility. Law enforcement officials have been intensifying their search, with one of the recaptured inmates already providing valuable intelligence.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has pledged to collaborate with security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape and prevent future incidents.
