The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced plans to reduce its workforce and travel expenses in response to funding cuts imposed by the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
UNICEF’s Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Gilles Fagninou, disclosed this on Monday during a visit to assess the organization’s ongoing programs at the Hajj Camp in Maiduguri, where repentant terrorists are undergoing rehabilitation.
Fagninou emphasized that UNICEF is actively working with African governments to mitigate the impact of the funding shortfall and ensure that critical programs continue.
“We are patronizing other sources of funding. We are discussing with the government, and they are taking measures to fill the gap that was created by the cut of funding from the US and others,” he stated.
Despite the financial constraints, UNICEF remains committed to its mission of supporting vulnerable children and communities across the region.
The organization is now looking to alternative funding sources and partnerships to sustain its humanitarian and development initiatives.
