The Environmental Sanitation Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has convicted several individuals for violating the state’s sanitation laws during the routine end-of-the-month cleanup.
The offenders were arrested by a joint team of police officers and Ibom Community Watch (ICW) personnel for failing to participate in the mandatory exercise. They were apprehended in various parts of the Uyo metropolis, including Abak Road, Ikot Ekpene Road, Aka Road, and other areas.
A member of the task force, Akaninyene Enang, confirmed that the arrested individuals were taken before the sanitation court. “At the end of the trial, those found guilty were made to undertake various civil punishments, including cleaning the streets,” he said.
Senior Magistrate Amanda Effiom, who presided over the court proceedings, stated that offenders faced different penalties depending on their cases. Some received fines, while others were assigned community service.
Prince Akpan Ikim, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), led security officials in overseeing the enforcement. He emphasized the importance of compliance with sanitation laws.
Authorities warned that future violators would face legal consequences, urging residents to participate in the monthly exercise to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
