Nyesom Wike, has raised concerns over the vast undeveloped land acquired by the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja.
During an inspection of construction projects, including a 15km road to Wassa and access roads to the EFCC Academy in Karu, Wike described the university’s land use as “unacceptable.” He questioned the rationale behind acquiring over 1,000 hectares without significant development.
“What makes a university is not the large expanse of land,” Wike stated. “It is the infrastructure and the quality. If you don’t develop it, the government will take it back and give it to those who will.”
He warned against institutions acquiring land for speculation, hinting at potential misuse. “Before you know it, they will begin to lease it out. It does not make sense,” he remarked.
Wike vowed to engage the FCT director of Lands, alongside university representatives and the Police, to assess the situation.
On the ongoing infrastructure projects, he expressed satisfaction, noting that President Tinubu would be pleased with the progress. “Promises made, promises fulfilled,” he said, adding that abandoned contracts would not be tolerated under the current administration.
He commended contractors for their work and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to Abuja’s development.
